NDIS support coordination is a funded support that helps you understand your plan, choose providers and connect with community services. It comes in three levels, and you can ask your NDIA planner to include it. You may need it if using your plan feels unclear. The NDIA will change how it is delivered from 1 July 2028.

Key Takeaways

What Is NDIS Support Coordination?

According to the NDIS, a support coordinator helps you use your plan effectively. In practice, a good coordinator can help you:

Support coordinators can be registered or unregistered providers. The NDIS describes the aim as giving you the right information so you can make your own decisions about your plan and your NDIS supports. See the NDIS's own page on what a support coordinator is for the full description.

What Are the 3 Levels of NDIS Support Coordination?

The NDIS can fund three levels of support coordination. Which one is in your plan depends on your goals, needs, situation and funding.

Level

What it helps with

Level 1: Support Connection

Understanding your plan, building your ability to connect with community and mainstream supports, and increasing your confidence to manage your plan

Level 2: Support Coordination

Building the confidence and skills to direct your life, including maintaining relationships, living more independently and being part of the community

Level 3: Specialist Support Coordination

A higher level for a more complex situation. A specialist coordinator makes sure you have consistent services during any challenges in your support environment

Your NDIA planner will talk to you about which level is right for you.

Support Coordinator vs Plan Manager: What Is the Difference?

The two roles are often confused. The NDIS puts it simply: a plan manager helps keep track of your funding, and a support coordinator helps with your supports.

Do You Need NDIS Support Coordination? 6 Questions to Ask Yourself

There is no test you pass or fail. These questions come from what the NDIS says a coordinator helps with. If you answer "yes" to several, support coordination may be worth asking about.

  1. Are you unsure what your support budgets can pay for?
  2. Are you unsure how your funding is managed, or what you can claim and when?
  3. Do you find it hard to choose between providers, or to know when you need a service agreement?
  4. Do you want help connecting with community and mainstream services?
  5. Do you want to build confidence using the participant portal or the my NDIS app?
  6. Do you want help checking whether your current supports are working, or changing providers?

If you answered "no" to most of these, you may already be comfortable running your plan. The NDIS notes that support coordination funding is usually included in a plan for a set amount of time, because as you become more confident, you are less likely to need a coordinator.

How Do You Get Support Coordination in Your NDIS Plan?

You do not receive it automatically. The NDIS says you can ask for funding for a support coordinator in your plan if you would like to work with one.

  1. Decide what you want help with. Use the six questions above as a starting point.
  2. Raise it with your NDIA planner or your my NDIS contact. Explain why a coordinator would help you use your plan.
  3. Talk through the level. Your NDIA planner discusses which of the three levels suits your situation.

Your planning meeting is the natural time to raise this. Our guide to what happens at your first NDIS planning meeting covers how to prepare, and notes that a support coordinator can come with you as a support person.

What Is Changing for Support Coordination From 1 July 2028?

On 20 August 2026 the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Act 2026 received Royal Assent. The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing sets out what this means for support coordination on its page about the changes to the NDIS:

The same page lists a separate change to plan management: from 1 October 2027 the NDIA will set up a panel of plan management providers, with an initial 6-month transition period.

Details may change, and the NDIS website says it is updating its information to reflect the new legislation. Until you are told otherwise, your current plan is what applies. Check your plan or ask your NDIA planner what is funded for you.

Where Care Steps Australia Fits In

We want to be clear about what we do and do not do. Care Steps Australia is not a support coordination provider. We are a registered NDIS provider based in Punchbowl, delivering personal care, community nursing, daily living support and community participation for participants across Punchbowl, Bankstown, Campsie, Liverpool and Campbelltown. You can see the full range on our NDIS services page.

A support coordinator helps you find and arrange providers. Once you have chosen one, the provider delivers the supports. If your coordinator is referring you to us, they can use our call-back form, which has a "Support coordinator / referrer" option. Our guide on registered vs unregistered NDIS providers explains what to check when comparing providers.

FAQ

Rates are set by each provider, and the NDIS pricing arrangements set the maximum prices for NDIS supports. We do not quote a figure here. Ask any coordinator what they charge before you sign up, and check the current NDIS pricing arrangements.

Yes. The NDIS says you can use plan managers and support coordinators to help you work towards your goals. The plan manager looks after the funding, and the coordinator helps with your supports.

Yes. The NDIS says you choose your support coordinator and can change them at any time. You do not have to wait for your current plan to end.

No. Support coordinators can be registered or unregistered providers. If you want to confirm a provider's registration status, check it before you sign a service agreement.

Use the NDIS provider finder. Enter your suburb or postcode, choose the matching suburb, then pick the level of support coordination in your plan. For Level 1 or Level 2, tick the registration group "assistance in coordinating or managing life stages / transitions and supports". For Level 3, tick "support coordination". Your NDIA planner can also send a request for service to up to four support coordinators.

The NDIS suggests asking: how much do they charge, do they work with people with your disability, what outcomes have they achieved for people like you, who will you speak to or work with, and what is their cancellation policy. Once you have chosen, it is a good idea to make a service agreement
